Investigator Paul Manning will present a case study on the 2014 "Snow's Clam Box" fire, which was a multi-jurisdictional investigation involving ATF, RI State Fire Marshal's Office, Glocester Police, the US Attorney's Office, as well as partners in Massachusetts law enforcement agencies. The three year investigation culminated in a federal trial and sentencing. Investigator Manning will discuss the various evidence utilized, the issues encountered by the investigative team and the lessons learned.
Investigator Hannah Burnes will then discuss the importance of properly supporting your cause conclusion through adequate testing. Hypothesis testing is pivotal to reaching a sound determination but is sometimes bypassed or inadequately described. An incomplete understanding of how simple tests and challenges can be used to accomplish this step is to blame. This class will discuss methodology for testing your hypothesis and culminate in a hands-on practical and live burn.
